About Thanka Tatanka
(Substance Use Disorder Focus)

Our Mission
Thanka Tatanka is a South Dakota-based nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding access to treatment for Substance Use Disorders, strengthening the behavioral health workforce, and building coordinated recovery systems across Western South Dakota and surrounding Tribal communities.
Our mission is to remove financial barriers to life-saving treatment, strengthen long-term recovery pathways, and support community resilience through culturally grounded collaboration and strategic partnerships.

Why We Exist
Substance Use Disorders — including alcohol, opioids, methamphetamine, prescription drug misuse, and polysubstance use — continue to impact rural and Tribal communities across Western South Dakota.
Limited detox and residential capacity, workforce shortages in addiction counseling, and fragmented referral systems leave many individuals without timely access to care. Emergency departments, Tribal health programs, schools, and justice systems regularly encounter individuals in crisis, yet without structured financial access and coordinated follow-through, many fall through systemic gaps.
Thanka Tatanka was created to close those gaps and build a seamless pathway from crisis to sustained recovery.

Our Model: A Coordinated Continuum of Care
Thanka Tatanka operates as a centralized Care Coordination Hub that connects healthcare systems, Tribal health departments, treatment providers, educational institutions, and community partners.
Our coordinated model supports individuals through a structured pathway:
Hospital or Community Referral → Scholarship Access → Detox → Residential Treatment → Outpatient Services → Peer Support → Long-Term Recovery
By aligning financing, workforce development, and cross-system collaboration, we reduce barriers, improve treatment engagement and completion rates, and strengthen long-term recovery outcomes.

Core Initiative 1: Treatment Scholarship Program
The Treatment Scholarship Program eliminates financial barriers that prevent individuals from entering and completing treatment for Substance Use Disorders.
The Recovery Scholarship Fund supports:
-
Medical detoxification
-
Residential treatment
-
Step-down outpatient services
-
Transitional recovery housing
Priority populations include uninsured and underinsured individuals, Native American Tribal members, veterans, justice-involved individuals, and individuals referred from hospitals or community partners.
Each scholarship recipient receives structured case coordination to ensure continuity of care and successful transition between levels of treatment.

Core Initiative 2: Workforce Development & Internship Pipeline
South Dakota faces a critical shortage of addiction professionals equipped to address alcohol, stimulant, opioid, and polysubstance use disorders.
Thanka Tatanka is building a structured workforce pipeline in partnership with regional colleges and universities. Our workforce development model includes:
-
Supervised clinical internships
-
Rotations in detox, residential, outpatient, and community settings
-
Cultural competency training focused on Tribal communities
-
Peer recovery certification pathways
-
Continuing education opportunities for professionals
This initiative ensures that rural and Tribal communities are supported by a sustainable behavioral health workforce capable of addressing the full spectrum of Substance Use Disorders.

Core Initiative 3: Prevention & Community Education
Long-term recovery and prevention require community-wide awareness and early intervention.
Thanka Tatanka delivers:
-
Substance use awareness programming
-
School and college outreach
-
Training for first responders and families
-
Community education sessions focused on early identification and referral pathways
Through prevention education and community engagement, we strengthen protective factors and promote earlier access to care.

Strategic Partnerships
Thanka Tatanka collaborates with regional hospitals, Tribal health departments, veterans’ health systems, community-based treatment providers, criminal justice diversion programs, and educational institutions.
We do not duplicate services. Instead, we strengthen existing systems by serving as a coordinating and financing bridge that connects individuals to appropriate care and ensures accountability across the continuum of Substance Use Disorder treatment.

Commitment to Cultural Responsiveness
We recognize the unique historical and cultural context of Tribal communities in Western South Dakota. Thanka Tatanka is committed to culturally grounded engagement, collaborative planning with Tribal leaders and health systems, and respectful integration of cultural values within recovery pathways.
Recovery is most sustainable when it is community-rooted, culturally responsive, and built in partnership with the communities it serves.

Accountability & Transparency
Thanka Tatanka is committed to measurable outcomes and responsible stewardship of public and private funds.
We track key performance metrics including:
-
Number of scholarships awarded and completed
-
Workforce trainees placed into behavioral health roles
-
Referral sources and system coordination outcomes
-
Program participation and community education reach
Quarterly reporting and annual impact summaries ensure transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Our Vision for the Future
Thanka Tatanka is building a scalable model for rural and Tribal Substance Use Disorder treatment and recovery coordination that can be replicated across South Dakota and beyond.
Our long-term vision is a recovery system where access is not determined by geography, income, or insurance status, but by coordinated systems, sustainable workforce capacity, and community commitment.
